13 Years of Christmas Tradition at Gamla Riksarkivet

Set within a historic building on Riddarholmen, Gamla Riksarkivet’s Christmas buffet has become a cherished tradition for Stockholm locals and visitors from across the country. With Niklas Ekstedt at the helm, guests are once again invited to enjoy a generous Christmas buffet where traditional craftsmanship, familiar flavours and creative new additions take centre stage.

This year’s Christmas buffet offers a delightful combination of traditional favourites and exciting new additions. Highlights include scallop pâté and herring with browned butter, lemon and chives. Guests can also look forward to an abundant selection of festive favourites, from the traditional herring buffet to warm dishes and an entire room dedicated to Christmas sweets, cheeses and desserts.

Niklas Ekstedt, the restaurateur behind Gamla Riksarkivet’s acclaimed Christmas buffet, shares his thoughts on this year’s edition:

“The Christmas buffet is something we look forward to every year. We keep the favourites our guests love, while also taking the opportunity to explore new flavours and ideas. Even after thirteen years, it’s still just as exciting and special to set the table for Christmas at Gamla Riksarkivet. What makes this year even more special is that we’re extending the celebrations all the way through December 26,” says Niklas Ekstedt.

Beyond the food, it is the unique setting that makes the Christmas buffet truly special. With its historic halls, festive decorations and magical atmosphere, Gamla Riksarkivet transforms each year into a place where generations come together to celebrate Christmas.

This year, the Christmas celebrations will last a little longer. For the first time, the Christmas buffet season has been extended through December 26, giving even more guests the opportunity to experience this beloved tradition during the Christmas holidays.

Gamla Riksarkivet’s Christmas buffet opens on November 6 and welcomes guests through December 26.
